Set in 1930s Shanghai, the story opens with legendary gambler Gon and his vow to recover his father's casino from Shanghai tycoon Fung In his quest, he becomes acquainted with Sou and uncovers her fiance's nefarious conspiracy. Sou gives her heart to Gon, but he can't forget his old love Gu. Meanwhile, up-and-coming gangster Hui Man Keung is quickly making his name in Shanghai. Crossing paths during chaotic times, Hui, Gon, and Ding Lik become brothers and business partners, but Fung recruits Hui and Ding to his side through backhanded methods. Though deeply in love with Fung's daughter Ching Ching, Hui can only turn away from love and friendship when Fung's true nature is revealed. Fung, however, is not about to just let Hui walk away.

Dai Fusheng (played by Lin Jiadong), Liu Ersuo (played by Chen Haomin) and Hui Ting (played by Zhang Shenyue) met in an orphanage. MAN feels sympathized with HO SAU SAU (Tang Lai Ming, Joyce) who suffers from slight mental disorders. Trying to help, MAN allows her to come into her family but this creates an opportunity for SAU to replace MAN’s role as a wife and a mother completely. Because of a fatal shooting case, plain-clothes Sergeant Ko Lik-kei runs into a “dull” and “troublesome” witness called Lee Ho-fan. Lik-kei is instructed to protect Ho-fan at all times. Initially, the duo are strangers that cannot stand each other. They then gradually get along. Meanwhile, an apparel company of which Ho-fan is a major shareholder is found to have involved in illicit dealings. Yip Cheung-lok and his son Yip Ming-kwan, who are member of senior management, are associated with these activities. Lik-kei teams up with Ho-fan and Ho-fan’s younger sister Lee Chung-ying, who is a barrister by profession, to investigate. Lik-kei and Chung-ying get entangled in a relationship in the process. Also, Lik-kei’s elder sister Ko Wing-yumand Ho-fan get along sometimes and provoke each other at other times. Fate has brought the foursome together, causing a case that has remained unsolved for more than twenty years to be reopened.
